I found a vinyl rip of A Lot of Sorrow the other day. There's something weirdly meditative about it. Although I'm only 8 tracks in, I might hate the song forever after all 99. Have you managed to get through all 99? I'm not sure I'd cope tbh. Not yet, but I'm getting there. I heard some recordings right after it happened and they were quite emotional.

Immediately love it. I listened to it five times in a row last night. I can't figure out how I didn't take to I'm The Man To Be first time round, it's amazing. This is like Stevie all over again How are you liking the whole album, highroyds?

The whole album seems quite light somehow, maybe I'm reading too much into it but I feel like you can tell they had the freedom of doing whatever they wanted without the pressure of having to fit a certain sound.

Totally agree. It sounds like it was a fun album to make. Some of the lyrics are hilarious and some are quite moving (and some both). I've seen reviews say it's a more personal album, but to me The National stuff sounds personal too, this is just expressing a slightly different side of Matt Berninger's personality maybe, more playful? I only got around to watching Mistaken for Strangers the other day, which wasn't bad timing as it happens, cos so much of this album seems rooted in his growing up in Cincinnatti (I'll be I'm the only person here getting a "WKRP in Cincinatti earworm every time I type that place name) and stuff related to that, so it all kind of fits together nicely for me.

Bit belated cos I've felt so shit since but I saw El Vy live on Thursday and it was such a lovely gig. The songs worked so well live. Matt's voice sounded incredible and hearing him sing those songs live definitely added something. Bittersweet cos it made me even more gutted I didn't get to see The National live when they played London last year. Brent Knopf's keyboards were wonderful too. No Time To Crank The Sun was particularly mesmerising.
They basically played the whole album plus a mad cover of She Drives Me Crazy by Fine Young Cannibals that somehow worked really well.

Day of the Dead is out today! It's a giant tribute album to the Grateful Dead, put together by the Dessners. The National have a couple of songs on it, but also loads of other interesting people.

They posted a snippet of some music today and I got an email containing artwork that can only be described as 48:13's blue cousin. Things are happening!

Are you going highroyds? Couldn't be much better I think Probably. It'll be interesting to see the venue, and my dad might come along if he can sit.
