10 listens in. Time for a review:
Holy fucking shit where to even begin?
Well first of all, there is nothing even slightly close to a bad song on this album. The weakest track is "You're In Love With A Psycho" and it is so ridiculously danceable and catchy with great lyrics, so every other song is all uphill from there. "Ill Ray" is a powerhouse opening track that encapsulates a little bit of almost everything FCOL has to offer. Great lyrics, massive drops and dancehall breakdowns. Awesome. "Psycho" has some of the most catchy lyrics of the band's career up to that point... Until the rest of the album comes along to show us what real songwriting is all about! "Twentyfourseven" Flips expectations on their head early on. This song is a bomb going off on the track to wipe away all thought in its wake. Badass levels are through the roof from the time the first note plays to the time Tom's last word echoes out at the end. "Good Fight" is so relentlessly catchy it keeps moving up my list of favorite songs. Once again, just tremendous lyrics carrying along a groovy song that won't stand still. What can be said about "Wasted" that the song doesn't say for itself? GLORIOUS track and my favorite on the album. For proof of how good this album is, "Comeback Kid" doesn't even crack the top 6 best songs on it for me. There is nothing wrong with this song. Quite the opposite in fact. This would be a top 5 track on ANY of their other albums. Not so here. It's just outshined by so much originality and raw emotion elsewhere. "The Party Never Ends" is on the weak spectrum of FCOL and it would be a standout on any album from West Ryder on up. "Are You Looking For Action?" is nearly 8 and half minutes long with a repetitive beat and it somehow never gets old. Somehow it only gets more exciting.
"All Through The Night" is the melancholy follow up to "British Legion" I have been begging to hear for the past 11 years. So so SO beautiful and sad. Then FCOL turns that frown upside down with "Sixteen Blocks" and gets you chanting along with that defiant middle finger of a chorus until you're convinced you must be watching them live because how could they have possibly captured that specific energy on an album. They hold onto that "live show" energy into the last 2 songs as well, but by the time you get to the first chorus in "Bless This Acid House", there's no more scratching your head and wondering how they did it. Instead you thank cosmic forces everywhere they were able to crank that feeling up to 11. Finally, "Put Your Life On It" rides that same energy with a lighters-in-the-air sing-along with so much feeling in it. The feeling of euphoria is all-encompassing as the reverb leaves Tom's vocals at the last few seconds. Someone said it before me and I will agree with them vehemently that is their best album closer since "The Doberman"- and yet again, this incredible closing track doesn't even crack the top half of the album in terms of quality. For Crying Out Loud, this is a thrilling ride!
