I'm getting a record player for Christmas and rather excited. I've seen that quite a few on here like collecting vinyl. Do you think sound is better?

Well, i listen to the music on CD, but LP is better. LP is 24-bit FLAC, uncompressed. So it is theoretically as good as the master record. The only limit you get is your appliances. And of course LP tends to physically get older faster than CD.
But you can actually hear the difference between CD and LP with good speakers and amplifier. In my own experience it depends a lot on what kind of music is playing and how it is produced and recorded (for example AAA, DDD, etc.) General rule is - the more acoustic the more difference you hear. Experience can vary for everybody, but i hear no difference with techno and electronic records, but if you listen to classical music, you will hear clear difference even with medium class hi-fi set.
So with other words - LP does "contain" better sound, but how much you will hear it depends on some factors.

Do you think sound is better? Definitely. I mean I don't always hear the difference but there are some songs which have truly different quality on vinyl. Fire is one example - Tom's voice sounds so different and so silky to me on vinyl. There is certain depth and richness, especially if the record player has good speakers (mind doesn't really). And vinyl records just look more beautiful.
