Well, the NME's version of 500 greatest albums is published (starts here www.nme.com/photos/the-500-greatest-albums-of-all-time-500-401/323975/1/1). To say i am disappointed would be an understatement. Of all people NME is a magazine you would expect something better from than another pretentious list of radio friendly records. I will try to explain what bothers me.
- First of all - where is Kasabian? And where is UNKLE? Well, if this kind of music is too "underground" (or not mainstream enough) to NME, what is Primal Scream doing on the list then?
- A lot of bands and albums are missing. Where are Noel Gallagher, Deep Purple, Depeche Mode, Queen, Dire Straights, John Frusciante, RHCP, Tom Petty, Black Sabbath, Porcupine Tree, Elton John, Jean Michel Jarre, Scorpions, Golden Earring, The Music and many many many others? Pink Floyd, Oasis, Neil Young and Led Zeppelin are there but a lot of albums are missing.
- And i feel some modern bands probably deserved to be mentioned as well, in particular Biffy Clyro, Bat for Lashes, WFANFC, TV on the Radio, The Cooper Temple Clause, etc.
- I really don't understand NME's obsession with some rather average bands, like LCD Soundsystem, Metromony, Suede, Pulp, Television, Carole King, The Orb and some more. With all respect - they are all decent bands, and there is no shame to like them, but they are not special. Do they really suggest that LCD Soundsystem is better than "Whish You Were Here", or "Brothers in Arms", or "Standing on the Shoulder of Giants"? REALLY???
- And another thing is the positioning. Just for example, "Revolver" on number 2 - that i can imagine, but "The Queen is Dead" as the best album of al times??? Come on!!!
I do realise that those lists are subjective and I might not "see the point", but if you call yourself a professional music magazine, you should make a better job of such kind of lists. Because the way it is now it seems those "professionals" have just a shallow knowledge/understanding of music. I have already seen some reactions on the web, and alternative top 10 albums of random people make much more sense than this list (even thet my list would be different of course).
Well, maybe i am overreacting a little, so please express your opinion on the list. Do you agree with it, what do you miss and what do you feel should not be there?
