Honestly I'd take that with a grain of salt. First of all this band doesn't know how time works. Constantly saying things like "we haven't played this song in 10 years" when it was actually 2-3 was almost a meme back in the day.
I don't believe he's saying everything was exclusively horrible for 15 years. According to Chris they even parted on somewhat good terms with a hug. I think things being what they are you are probably more likely to remember the bad things. And being in a band is weird and isolated, you go through everything together and in close proximity which amplifies it. They had a brutal tour schedule for a few years there. We were always joking about how they didn't know how to take a break, but it seemed like what they wanted, with Tom going stir-crazy and Serge realising after two weeks that the deck chair is an illusion.
I think there were probably things we never knew about, which likely adds to the feeling of insularity, but I also believe they were getting on most of the time. I saw them live 40+ times and they were kissing each other rather frequently. I don't know if you are like that with someone you secretly hate just to keep up appearances. Even as a fan it's been so painful, it's probably easier to tell yourself it was always bad and it was all a lie.
