www.jameshargreavesguitar.com/articles.htmlRead 'Shoot the Singer' and you'll soon question the integrity of Serge and Co. Stunning interview and makes me wonder whether Serge really is as humble as he comes across on the surface? I can't believe they treated Tom that badly on the US tour. That's Chris and Ian included. As Andy Mac says, it seems to have been a form of workplace bullying. Tom was clearly no Saint, but his so-called brothers metaphorically gave him enough rope...

Serge certainly doesn't look good there. I don't think we'll ever know the full story of what went on behind the scenes, even if you agree to the notion that Serge was that jealous... Would Chris and Ian let Serge treat Tom that poorly? Guess versions will always differ between them regarding what happened.

I wouldn't want to think that Serge could be that jealous/manipulative but, let's face it, Karloff was booted out for 'creative differences' having been an absolute force majeure on the debut album. Ever since, Serge has considered himself the 'Alchemist' for the band's music. On the surface, it appeared that everyone was happy to let Serge handle that, but Tom obviously grew resentful about his own ideas being shunned. As for the US Tour story - why would Tom make that up? It almost feels like Tom's issues had come to such a head that the rest of the band and management thought that if they kept him at arm's length he'd either do something stupid or quit the band and go solo anyway. Unfortunately the former happened and the rest is history. For sure, there's a tinge of resentment in Tom and I'm sure he was difficult to be around at the height of his issues, but to shun him and leave him to his own devices seems just plain bad form to me? As for Serge, anyone that calls their studio the 'Sergery' must surely have an above-average ego, don't you think? One of these days I'm hoping I'll wake up and it's still March 2020 and the last few years have been one bad dream, but the more I read, the more I'm convinced Kasabian as we knew and loved it are gone forever. Sure, some will kid themselves that they're just as good now and are killing it live, but the reality is they are a different band now. The chemistry is It would've been like Noel and the rest of Oasis booting out Liam in 2009 and continuing to make music as Oasis. People wouldn't have stood for it.

Karloff was booted out for 'creative differences' having been an absolute force majeure on the debut album. People vastly overestimate Karloff's input on the debut album. He had a girlfriend in America and didn't want to come back to the UK to record Empire. Let's not.

The band's sonic power and electronic influences were greatly diminished post debut album and the Empire single. It's a different argument to the initial topic, though. I accept that Serge has been the driving creative force lyrically. In fact, I think he's written the lyrics on every album? Whether that was healthy/sustainable to take SUCH a creative hold on a band is a debate for another day too.
