On reflective opening track ‘ALCHEMIST’, which begins with the soothing sound of crashing waves, that figure longingly recalls “a time that we all could believe in”, but ushers in a new era with the demand: “Shut the door on your way if you’re leaving”. - NME

This is so clearly about Tom, it's untrue.
In fact, so many of the songs are about Tom, whether Serge wants to admit it publicly or not.

In fact, so many of the songs are about Tom, whether Serge wants to admit it publicly or not. I was surprised by that, but also not really. I think as a writer you naturally pour whatever you go through into your art. Consciously or not. He's always written about Tom. But I also feel like he shouldn't have to explain any of it.

Totally agree on the latter. I don't expect him to come out and explain to me in depth what he's trying to say, but so much of the lyrics are about looking at what Tom used to be like. Rocket Fuel also seems entirely based on Tom - I think he's describing Tom as his Rocket Fuel i.e. his force of nature when he was in good form.
