Slightly belated review but... what a gig!
Venue quibbles first. The security were horrible and the entrance system was weird. I've been to the Cliffs before and it's been OK, I think the anti-tout measures meant they had a lot of temp staff and they were idiots. We got there 7.30ish and there was still a queue - never had to queue for allocated seats before. Then security confiscated my friend's camera - just a digital compact - wtf? They didn't spot any cameras that were in cases - duh! But they were just nuts - confiscating dry shampoo, face creams, all sorts off of other people in the queue. Was a lot of standing up I could really have done without tbh.
Positives though - we got Ill Ray! That was amazing, proper Vlad style stormer. Seen a few people say they think it could be their best song ever and I wouldn't go that far, but it was great live. As was Bless This Acid House, which I hadn't really taken to on Jools. YILAP and Comeback Kid both worked well.
Loved hearing La Fee Verte again (question - 'eyes of a madman' - do we think it's back because of the general insanity theme they seem to be working with at the mo?), loved not having to hear Days Are Forgotten again, but for me Stevie was the ultimate highlight, it still amazes me how perfect that song always is.
Oh, and we got a bit of Tom and Serge getting the crowd to sing Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside, that was fun.
One weird thing - the crowd in the balcony. We were fourth row and everyone around us was just sat down the whole time until LSF. Handy for me having to sit down every third song or so, cos my view wasn't obscured, but it was a bit odd.
