This is an interview they did with the German radio station 1LIVE in September 2009. It was almost completely dubbed over in German and you could only hear some snippets of what they were really saying, so I translated/transcribed it a few years ago, I thought maybe some people here are interested as well. Feel free to link to this thread but please don't repost it anywhere.
Before we talk about anything else I have to ask if it's true that you allegedly caught swine flu recently.
Tom: I got on a plane with the tour manager and when we landed in Sydney and I was feeling really sick, and that's what happened. No one actually diagnosed us with swine flu, it could have been something else, I wasn't tested for swine flu, they probably would have locked me up in China for a month trying to figure it out. It wasn't the nicest experience, it took me two or three days to get over it. Thanks for asking.
You've been touring for about ten years now, do you still have flats in England or do you just live out of a suitcase?
Tom: Yes, we do still have flats. We still live in Leicester, Sergio's got a nice little hole, haven't ya?
What?
(Serge laughs)
Tom: Yeah, a hole, a rabbit hole, down below the... and I dug a tunnel to it and live there now.
You're making things up again. I heard about that, sometimes you just...
Tom: Yes.
What about family, do you have families that come on tour with you?
Serge: Ian the drummer and Ben the keyboarder, they have kids. And actually Jay, the guitarist, he's got three of them. Sometimes they'll come to a gig in England when we're playing somewhere close, but apart from that, no.
Is it a rule that they're not allowed to come on tour?
Serge: No, no, no. There's no rule. That's how we roll, you know.
Tom: There was someone in the band before who didn't see it like that and that didn't work out.
So you kicked him out?
Tom: That was ages ago, man. Really, a long time ago.
Your current album, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, was number one in England, how did you celebrate that?
Tom: Yes! How did we celebrate? We played a gig that night.
Serge: It was just amongst us, the crew and the band.
Tom: We had a few drinks we didn't have to pay for, that was nice.
Serge: A few friends, it wasn't a big party, very intimate, just everyone who's been working on it.
I noticed that a lot of your music is being used for TV ads or in video games and TV shows. I was wondering, do you handle that yourselves, do they still ask you or does the management make the decision that there's for example a Kasabian song in the game Fifa 09.
Serge: You just get a phone call, and with a band like us, it's difficult... If you do it the way you just said you can reach a lot of people. Especially when you're making futuristic 21st century rock & roll, that's how you get it out there, it's a good way.
Do you watch it on TV later or play the games with your songs in them?
Serge: Yeah, we play Playstation. Kills an hour before the show. Only football, though, not those kind of shooting games, we don't do that.
But you play real football as well.
Serge: Yeah, yeah. Not as much as I'd like to, though, I can never find the time.
What about you, Tom?
Tom: Not really, mate. I don't participate in any kind of sport. I like to paint. I read as well, when I get around to it, and I like to paint and draw faces.
When you happen to see a film or a TV spot with your music, what does that feel like?
Serge: I like it, it's good. TV things, you haven't really got any control over that, it's always a surprise when you sit there and suddenly hear your song. It's different with films, that really cements what you have achieved. And I think big screens suit our music well.
You're so modest.
Serge: Yeah, well... When it happened for the first time it was Tomb Raider, I think, and we got sent the DVD and sat down and it was a strange feeling, it was in a crazy scene, it was a crazy film anyway. But after a few years it's just...
Tom: ...part of you.
The actress Rosario Dawson appears on the album, you did you get together, how did you meet her?
Serge: She came and saw us play, she's really nice person, and the song was a duet so it just seemed like a really good idea, I thought, and if you listen to it in twenty years time you'll have a really good actress with a really good band, it's good for the future.
I've heard you told her to ask Tarantino to direct a music video for you, is that true?
Serge: I think everyone has said that once in their lives. You say these things in interviews, I think it's a dream almost every rock band has.
But you got pretty close to it with Rosario, did she at least try to put in a word for you there?
Serge: Yeah, apparently she played him the song. While he was eating sausages. And he liked it, I don't know.
But another famous director asked you to soundtrack his next film, do you know who I'm talking about?
Serge: Ah yes, I heard something about Guy Ritchie.
Right. It was in The Sun. Has he contacted you yet?
Serge: I heard he talked to our manager, maybe something will come of it, I don't know, it sounds like a good idea.
You like Guy Ritchie's films?
Serge: Yeah, Lock, Stock... is amazing.
If you meet him, I think I'd only ask about his ex, Madonna. What it was like at home.
Serge: I probably wouldn't ask him that. You don't talk about ex-wives.
