Cutt Off single was released 9 years ago today, with its beautiful b-sides. It's my favourite song and never ever fails to make me happy, so I thought I'll make a thread about it. But I have so many feelings and opinions about it that writing about it is a bit hard - to paraphrase Jane Austen, if I loved it less, I might be able to talk about it more, so below is a random list of things about it.
The single version is so polished and gorgeous but I probably love the album version a tiny bit more because it has an outro which is my favourite bit and love the old live versions when Tom was singing or whistling along with it.
I have far too many favourite versions to list them here or link - here is a random early favourite. I love the very last performance from Gurtenfestival, and probably my personal favourite is the one from Berlin in 2010. I think I generally prefer the festival versions though, it's such a beautiful festival singalong song. Although I'm usually sure that the particular version I'm listening to is the best.
Hearing it in Sheffield for the warm up tour in 2011 was a huge surprise as I was sure it's going to be dropped. I loved Serge playing a tambourite to the outro during those gigs, it made the song super pretty.
I like the older so-called NME version, released in 2003 on an NME compilation, it's still so interesting to hear an earlier version and see how the song has developed. I think we're lucky to have that.
I love their remixes generally but I'm not a huge fan of Mad Action remix, it makes the song a bit dry and boring.
The acoustic version is so lovely but somehow I'm not that attached to it much.
Once I read a review of the song where the reviewer was very nice about 'the soft female backing vocals' and once Ian said in an interview that he loves playing it live, especially the middle 'pop' bit.
Hearing it live is always a mindblowing experience and I've been very very lucky to hear it. I hope it comes back one day.
This is all for today, I'll be back with more I'm sure
