Love the quote on the blog at the moment.
"...full of love, heroes and shady characters."
Sums it up so well. I'd argue that Serge hits the mark with his "storytelling" lyrics more often than when he gets more direct.
I'd say he has a third category, of "intent" lyrics. Your treat, Days kind of style.
Would love to hear some more of that storyteller style on album 6. The benchmark is so high.

I think his writing got a lot more specific over the years. The lyrics on the first album are pretty mad, they could be about anything, and I think from West Ryder onwards it got a bit more straightforward. Now there's a song about a friend's break up, a song about people using phones on trains, a song for the fans, lots of songs about Tom... I wouldn't mind if they returned a bit more to the spirit of the debut, just using words because they sound good, like LSF.

6 years old today. Isn't it one of the most perfect albums ever? 6 years on, I love it more and more, and still keep finding lots of beautiful little things in that magical place.

10 years since this came out. I still remember hearing the opening chords from Underdog for the very first time on Sony TV ad featuring the footballer Kaka maybe a month before the album dropped. Knew immediately it was the boys. It sent a shiver down my spine. Still does 10 years on.

They should do a string of O2 sized full album playback gigs to commemorate their finest hour.

They should do a string of O2 sized full album playback gigs to commemorate their finest hour. I wish they had done more gigs when it was 10 year anniversary of debut.

Ten years. Had to give it a listen in full this morning, curtains and eyes closed.
It's such an interesting listen. Lots of percussion I forgot about. Ian in particular has a whole spread of different textures on each song.
Vlad is an unbelievable sensory overload listening back. Sounds like the auditory equivalent of a flashing one-armed bandit in a dark pub.
Got to say the big stand out throughout was the amazing backing vocals. Massive wall of melody that really gives it that cinematic feel.
Also the strings! WDALTG, Take Aim, WRSB and Secret Alphabets highlights there. Love the eastern influence woven in to each one.
Secret Alphabets. Bloody hell. The mysterious atmosphere.
Love the stripped back production here and there from Dan the Automator. Makes me wonder what getting a producer on board again would do for a future album. The extra opinion in the studio and time spent on WRPLA is why it's so strong in my opinion.
When asked my favourite album, my heart says the debut but my head says West Ryder. Everything clicked on it. The songs, the production, the release, the chart success, the mythology. Perfect.

I was a casual fan before this album, and then through the Oasis connection (they were supporting them on the summer tour) I was aware that there was a third album coming. On May 23 the album leaked and by complete coincidence I happened to be searching for it. I wasn't even actively waiting for it, I didn't know the release date, but I found it the day it leaked, listened to it and it blew my little mind and changed my life.
Everyone started celebrating on the 5th because that's on Wikipedia and it was the earliest release date in a few countries, but it came out in the UK on the 8th.

Jesus... 10 years... I mean what can I say about this one that hasn't already been said? It's their crown jewel to this day. The moment Serge took full creative control and Kasabian became my absolute favorite band. I still remember looking on Google for Kasabian merch and stumbling upon the leak for WRPLA. I had LOVED their debut and thought Empire wasn't nearly as good but was still worth listening to so I downloaded it and prepared for the worst while hoping for the best. Instantly I was transported to whatever magical universe Serge had conjured into existence while making this masterpiece. Everything works here. While I think Velociraptor! is just a touch more creative, it suffers from overproduction on several tracks. WRPLA has flawless production and execution throughout its entire run. The lyrics are perfect. The music is out of this world. They know when to go hard and when to go soft while still making even the mellowest tracks sound massive. There is no weak link to this album. 10/10
