and you actually had your phones confiscated? Well, they obviously couldn't allow any recording equipment, we knew that beforehand. It was a very special, moving experience, especially with the band having so much time for everyone. They came out briefly to introduce themselves, like that was necessary, and the album, before it started, they didn't have to come back to pose for 746 pics. But they did, because they're the sweetest, kindest people. Stevie is glorious, very colourful, it gave me a Let's Roll feeling, but more cinematic. Heartbreaking vocals by Serge for Glass, maybe slightly reminiscent of U Boat, but with more synths, and a long spoken word bit at the end by a poet whose name Tim told us but we forgot. Treat is dancey, sounds Can-inspired with a long electronic ending and thunderous drums. SPS is the only one that sounds nothing like the explosive rest of the album, very intimate and understated. While they're not too similar musically it reminded me of Happiness. I didn't hear the hints of Morricone that Q heard. Clouds was the most guitar heavy, with distorted vocals and a guitar solo in it. We'll have a more coherent post on the blog at some point, we're still going through all the notes we took.

Ah, hopefully it's the section with the drum sample!
Where Did All the Love Go? blending into Swarfiga is probably my favourite moment on any of the records so far, so the fact they're experiment with instrumental interludes again is great.

I love that too, instrumentals blending into songs and I hope we'll see lots of moments like that live during this tour. One of my favourite moments from the first album era bootlegs is Ovary Stripe blending into U Boat - in some old bootlegs they're not even cut, because people probably assumed it's one song.

For those of you who had the pleasure of hearing the album, where does it rank with the other albums. Is it their best yet?

We've obviously heard it once and it's difficult to rank, but I thought it's very very good and very different from the previous ones. If I could compare with any one of their albums, it reminded me of the debut album, with sort of more mature, richer sound (I'm a bit mindful of saying this because I'm not implying that the debut album wasn't mature or rich). It's like the first album's more evolved, grown-up sister.

Excellent! The debut album is still my favourite album, so if it has that vibe I'm in for a treat Are there any/Many anthems ala L.S.F, Fire, Vlad on this record. I do remember Serge saying its an album with huge festival tunes on it.

I do remember Serge saying its an album with huge festival tunes on it. Oh you are in for such a treat. I love the debut album too. Yes, lots of big songs, that's my most vivid memory from the playback, that everything was massive - Treat was huge with an amazing long loud outro, when I was taking notes I wrote that Doomsday totally sounds like a doomsday, I could see Bow being a big festival song although it's slower. It's such a weird position to be in now, that I can't hear this songs again until June but they're in my head. I feel like a kid who was taken to a toyshop, told choose something really special and then was told I'll get it only for Christmas.

We wanted this thread to be about the event and the new music and not turn into an argument, so all posts relating to it have been removed.

One of my favourite memories from the playback is seeing the band dancing all the time. They were in a little glass balcony above us and we could see all of them jumping up and down for almost all the songs. Ian danced through the whole album, and Tim told us that Tom was singing all the songs. There was this lovely moment of them headbanging to Bumblebee all together.
I find it so special to see a band enjoying their own music so much. They know that album, they've made it - they could sit down and have a drink but instead they were jumping up and down like excited children.

That would have been something to witness. I think they are sure they have cemented their place as Britain's best.

I thought the playback was really fun and not at all what I was expecting. It had a nice laid back informal party atmosphere, and I'm glad it was like that and not the sit-down formal event I was expecting. It was kind of annoying that people were chatting, especially over Treat and Glass, but people were having a good time and it was such a positive happy atmosphere, and people even applauded after some songs. Meeting the band after was also a massive bonus as I was NOT expecting it! (I didn't even think they were going to be there!) but they were friendly and gracious and adorable! So great that I knew quite a few people there, had so much fun! I wrote a feature about it for the magazine I write for, hopefully it will be uploaded soon and I'l post it here for anyone who is interested.
